If you’re a TV series junkie, then you probably have a huge list of shows to watch, ranging from comedies to action (and let’s not forget the guilty pleasures nobody knows about.) There’s one more show you need to add to your list: Permanent Roommates.
The best time to start watching this riveting Indian TV show is right after you have completed the Rickshaw Challenge or the India’s Cup– that way, you can have some Indian-style fun a bit longer. The show was launched in October 2014, thanks to The Viral Fever digital entertainment company, but back then, they only had an inkling about how successful the webisodes would become. The first season turned out to be a blockbuster (with 2.5 million views), and the second season just returned to the screens a couple of months ago.
Now, for the storyline: Tanya (played by Nidhi Singh) and Mikesh (played by Sumeet Vyas) are a couple who have been in a happy, long-distance relationship for three years. Season one starts with Mikesh moving back home to India after spending time in the United States. He plans on proposing to Tanya. And of course, things go on from there. (Not to share any spoilers, but…) Tanya is not too sure about moving in with someone who she had been in a long-distance relationship with, so they have to figure out whether they’re compatible in real life.
The secret to the show’s success according to Directors Sameer Saxena and Deepak Mishra is keeping everything real, and simple: „Mikesh and Tanya are everyday characters. When kept simple, life becomes much more fun, and they serve as wonderful examples.”
And, it seems like thriving for simplicity resonates well with the audience: people love Permanent Roommates for its light humour and the fact that it’s more modern than your usual Indian TV shows. It also depicts basic human behaviour when faced with difficulties in a relationship: to let go or not to let go? Are we able to let go at all? Well, if after your journey to India you cannot let go, this series will definitely help you hold on a bit longer…
