Non-Competitive Categories: There are some people (you know who you are) who want to bring their own rickshaws with formula 1 racing engines, electric batteries, solar panels, extended cabs that sit 12 or the modern day ‘Spruce Goose’ of auto rickshaw engineering. Because of the unfair (or simply ridiculous) advantage that these modifications give participants, they cannot be used to win the Rickshaw Challenge’s World Championship title but may be eligible for “most environmentally friendly,” or “most bizarre.”
You are not required to submit the €900 deposit, but may opt for a €100 deposit for a local cell phone, which we have found to be indispensable during this event.
€900 Ain’t cheap but with experience we’ve found that it’s the right number to make sure that no matter how hard you party after the day’s stage that you’ll remember not to lose your mobile or not to crash your auto rickshaw just for the hell of it without stopping to consider the deposit. It’s also a built in expense account if you simply want the support mechanics to do your repairs without locating & negotiating repair costs along the way. Prices for repairs and replacements are listed in the roadbook that you receive prior to the event. If something does happen and you wreck your ‘shaw then it’s up to you to file with the insurance company and after we’ve received any payments we reimburse you based on the deposit. We try help in every way possible, but it’s really up to you.

Accommodations are the responsibility of participants. In the roadbook you get a list of hotel/hostel options with as much information as possible. You can choose based on your priorities, though keep in mind that we are traveling during tourist season in some places that have very few options to start with. If you really want to you can camp out, but be warned: the rickshaw isn’t the most comfortable sleeping option. To make things easier for participants we offer limited accommodation packages before the start of the event. Our goal is to establish “best of” and “most budget friendly” packages, however these are really approximations based on what’s available en route. We cannot make both choices available to all participants as it is on a “first come, first serve” basis.
After several events we’re pretty good at setting basic guidelines for how much money you can squeak by on or how much you’ll need to do it in high style. India is much cheaper than other parts of the world but is not nearly as cheap as it is often supposed. The lower-end options are quite inexpensive but like all other parts of the world be prepared to pay for 5 star hotels and excellent service at rates not much different than ones you are familiar with. There’s sightseeing, souvenirs and unique must try experiences every where. Our average participant budget is approximately €40 per day per person.
We recommend raising €1500 per team for your charitable contribution. While this isn’t a requirement, we’ve found that the impact is tremendous both on the kids you’re making a life-changing donation to and the teams themselves who see the schools in action. Many past teams have reported that their participation in the charity was the highlight of their trip. This is perhaps because of the lasting nature that this charity has. Giving to a child’s health and education is a gift that only grows with time.
