Aamir Khan’s auto rickshaw escapes crash

Aamir Khan was on a promotional spree for his upcoming flick, ‘3 Idiots’. He has been traveling to various parts of India in costume to promote his film. Newly, when he was traveling in an auto-rickshaw in the look of an old man, his vehicle collided with another three wheeler and luckily, Aamir Khan escaped unharmed. But two of his co-passengers continual several injuries. Aamir with his two colleagues were taken to hospital.

CNGs & traffic control

My wife and I (total age: 140 years) being a be-car couple usually do our rare visiting/shopping either by walking, rickshaw or CNG. Over the last two weeks, my wife’s CNG has twice been accosted by a traffic cop who then grills both the driver and passenger with questions like “Where are you coming from and going, are you going by meter or paying extra?” as if the CNG drivers are the only ones making a little hay in the Bangladeshi sunshine! From long experience, and so as not to get embroiled in a three-sided altercation, my wife gives the driver a clean bill of health and is allowed to proceed.

The autorickshaw turns 52 this year
December 12th, 2009The first of the autos rolled out towards the end of 1957 under the banner of the Bachchraj Trading Corporation before the company was renamed Bajaj Auto. According to corporate lore, the term ‘autorickshaw’ was coined by N K Firodia as an improvement over the manual rickshaws in many parts of the country. The government initially licensed the company to make 1000 autos a year.

December 11th, 2009When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that this ride would be any different.
As we set off, my eyes fell on a few magazines (kept in an aircraft style pouch) behind the driver’s back rest. I looked in front and there was a small TV. The driver had put on the Doordarshan channel. My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some medicines. This was enough for me to realise that I was in a special vehicle.

Auto strike hits commuters badly in Haveri

The people of Haveri are being hit hard because of the ongoing strike by autorickshaw owners and drivers, which entered second day on Tuesday.
They demanded the civic authorities to repair the roads which are in a bad conditions in Haveri City Municipality limits. Many organizations, including the Bar Association, showed solidarity to the agitators.

Rick drivers hold city to ransom

In a city where auto drivers don’t hesitate to hold hapless commuters to ransom on a regular day, the two-day bandh came as a licence to fleece the public openly. From charging three times the regular fare to demanding an extra Rs 100 for running on petrol bought “in black”, auto drivers have been making the most of the tense situation in the city. What’s more, they claim they are doing the public a “service”.

Autorickshaw drivers, owners in Cuddalore stage protest

Members of the Cuddalore Town Autorickshaw Drivers’ and Owners’ Federation observed a token strike from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, urging the civic body to improve basic amenities.
Led by federation president A. Krishnamurthy, they took out a rally from ‘uzhavar sandhai’ to the Collectorate. According to sources, they had initially planned to take their vehicles off the road for 24 hours from 6 a.m. on Friday. However, following the intervention of Cuddalore MLA G.Aiyappan and municipal chairman T. Thangarasu, they staged protest only for 12 hours.
